Every day, more and more individuals make the decision to work towards a healthier lifestyle. Some are motivated by the desire to lose weight, others by the desire to simply be healthier in their day-to-day lives. When people make the switch to this mindset, a great deal of emphasis is usually placed on diet and exercise. While both of those things are a key part of weight management and a healthier overall lifestyle, there is another valuable tool that tends to fall by the wayside: Sleep.

The Forgotten Ally

Sleep is incredibly valuable as a weight management tool. However, most people don’t get nearly as much sleep as their bodies require. According to the CDC, sleep insufficiency in the United States is continually on the rise. Failing to get the recommended amount of sleep your body needs each night can lead to a variety of issues, including the increased potential for weight gain.

Increased Hunger

One of the pitfalls of a lack of sleep is that it can actually increase your appetite. Studies have shown that people  who only sleep a handful of hours a night need to intake more calories the following day. Other studies have shown that there could be a possible link between sleeplessness and weight gain. It isn’t clear if there is a causal relationship between the two factors, or if there is some other underlying cause. However, there is enough evidence to suggest that the two are linked.

Brain Power

When focusing on health, weight management, and exercise, it is all too easy to forget that the brain is just as important as the rest of our body. In Western society, we tend to favor the heart over the head, but no amount of idioms, metaphors, or imagery will change the fact that our brains are the real control center and they need to be cared for as well. Sleep is one of the primary ways we can care for our brains. Lack of sleep can cause headaches, lapses in concentration, and some studies have suggested that it can actually cause the brain to shrink.
