Meal Replacement Diet FAQS
1. Where did this program start?
The program was originally developed in Italy, about six years ago, by Prof. Gianfranco Cappello, a surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University of Rome. It has been used over 50,000 times on 19,000 patients in Europe. The program was modified and improved by Dr. Oliver Di Pietro, MD, FACP, founder of the KE Diet.
2. How does it work?
A proprietary solution is supplied to your body, 24 hours a day, through a tube as thin as a string of spaghetti, which goes through your nose directly into your stomach. There are no drugs or surgery. The solution delivers only proteins and fats, without carbohydrates or sugars.
3. Does it hurt?
The doctor uses a small amount local anesthetic to numb the nose before the procedure. This is used to make you more comfortable during the procedure.
4. What happens during the 10 days?
Before embarking on the program, you’ll require a physical exam and blood test to make sure you’re a suitable candidate. The installation of the feeding tube is easy. You’re given a small amount of local anesthesia, just to make you more comfortable when the tube (about the size of a string of spaghetti) is inserted through your nose and into your stomach. You’ll then be given the food supplement powder, pump and carrying pack. The powder is diluted in 1 liter of water. The doctor and support team will give you all the necessary instructions, and are available throughout the 10-day process for any additional help. During the 10-day process, you’re to drink only water, unsweetened tea, or black coffee – and with no additives of any kind (including lemon, milk, artificial sweeteners or sugar). This is a must, to maximize your weight loss. You’ll also measure the amount of ketosis in your urine, using the dipsticks provided, and fill in a daily record of your weight loss and other parameters. Again, the doctor and support team will give you all the necessary instructions. You’ll find it very easy! You’ll have a brief return visit to the clinic every three days, to make sure everything is going well and deal with any questions or concerns you may have.
5. How much does it cost?

5. I’m considering the intragastric balloon or weight loss surgery. Why should I consider the KE Diet?
The KE Diet is a protocol that is safe, effective and physician supervised throughout the process. In addition, you receive comprehensive tools to help you achieve long-term weight management success such as registered dietitian services and fitness assessments. The intragastric balloon, unfortunately, has been under more scrutiny lately due to issues with obstruction. Weight loss surgery is a wonderful intervention however if you’re hesitant to have surgery you might want to consider the KE Diet first along with our after-care services.
7. What is in the solution?
The solution is a proprietary mixture of proteins, fats, vitamins and other elements designed to maintain health while suppressing hunger during the 10 days. Many patient report their thinking is clearer a few days into the cycle, because they are not weighed down by carbohydrates.*
8. Why won’t I feel hungry?
You won’t feel hungry because you are being fed 24 hours a day continuously through the tube, virtually eliminating the discomfort of weight loss hunger.*
9. If I’ve had bariatric surgery, can I still follow the KE Diet?
Yes, if you are deemed to be an acceptable candidate, following a medical exam by our doctor.
10. Can people suffering from kidney or heart problems still undergo this diet?
All our patients receive a history, physical, blood tests and psychological evaluation before we consider them for this program. It is not generally recommended for people with serious medical or mental health issues. However, many heart patients do need to lose weight, and their suitability for the KE Diet is evaluated on a case by case basis.
11. What happens after Day 10?
After the tube is removed you are still part of our comprehensive treatment plan program. On day 10 you will meet with our registered dietitian for an individualized nutrition program that will help you continue with your wellness goals. In addition you will have a fitness assessment with our personal trainer to provide you with a personalized exercise plan that helps you not only meet your fitness goals but also keeps in mind your individual physical needs.* Your long term success is our priority! Also if you’d like to participate in another cycle of the KE Diet it’s recommended that you engage in our nutrition program for at least 10-14 days before starting another KE Diet cycle.
